NT Health Hero, Desmond Lyons
Introducing The #NTHealthHero, Desmond Lyons.
Desmond works at Top End Mental Health Inpatient Unit and is proudly the first Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP) employed within the service. Des works with Aboriginal people to assist in improving health outcomes and to provide effective, caring and appropriate cultural services and programs.
Born and raised in Darwin with his seven brothers and sisters, he also spent parts of his childhood living in various rural and remote locations across the Territory.
Des started his career in health in 2003 moving around Tennant Creek, Central Australia and Nhulunbuy before returning to Darwin in 2018 where he joined Top End Mental Health Service.
In 2018, Des was nominated at the ATSIHP Awards and won the Urban Practitioner of the year award, a very proud moment for Des.
"I find it a privilege to be able to visit remote communities regularly and provide care to Aboriginal people, who otherwise may not have received healthcare.”
